Laser-cutting earrings are a unique and fun way to make your own jewelry. You can use a Glowforge or any other laser to quickly make earrings in any shape or color that you want.

Lasers are such powerful tools that can create stunning results, especially with the small cuts needed to make earrings.

With a laser printer, you can easily make beautiful pairs of earrings that will impress your friends and family, or you can even start a small business selling them.

With a laser, you are able to cut designs that match your style and you’ll never have to worry about finding the perfect pair of earrings again.

Before you get started you will need to gather the supplies.

You will need:

Optional:

  • Stain or paint

Get your design

After you have all of your supplies, the first step is to decide on a design for your acrylic or wooden earrings.

You can use an existing SVG file or create your own design in Adobe Illustrator, Silhouette Studio, or Inkscape.

If you are creating your own design, be sure that the lines are at least 1 mm wide. You might want to make them a little wider to be safe.

If the lines are too thin, you risk your earrings being fragile.

Prep your material to be laser cut

If you are making laser cut wood earrings you will need to sand the surface of the wood before cutting it.

Sanding before you cut out your design saves tons of time because it is much easier to sand a large flat surface than it is to try and sand the small earrings.

If you are making acrylic jewelry, you’re in luck and you don’t need to sand before cutting.

Optional: Paint or stain the wood for your laser-cut earrings

If you want to paint or stain your earrings it is much easier to do this before you cut them out.

All the small curves and corners after you cut out your earring are very difficult to paint unless you have a very steady hand.

Optional: Apply a mask

Masking your wood or acrylic is a must if you are using a Glowforge to prevent smoke from staining the laser-cut earring. Use proofgrade materials if you want to skip masking it yourself.

If you are lucky enough to have a laser with air-assist like a Thunder Laser, masking is optional because the occasional smoke stain is quicker and easier to sand away than to remove the masking.

Cut out your design

Now it’s time to cut out your design.

Upload your design into your cutting program and pick the correct settings for the material being cut.

Once your settings are correct, send the file to the laser cutter and let it do its thing.

Assemble your earrings

Once your design is cut out, it’s time to assemble your earrings.

Open the jump rings using needle nose plyers and attach them to the top of each earring.

Most of the time, I find that using 2 jump rings makes the earrings face forward when worn.

If you can bend your earring hooks without them breaking, turning the hoop perpendicular to the hook will make it so you won’t need the second jump ring.

Then, using the pliers, open the second jump ring and slide it onto the earring hook.

Close the loop with the pliers.

You’ve now successfully made a pair of laser-cut earrings!

Put on your new earrings or gift them to a friend.

Now that you know how to make laser-cut earrings, the possibilities are endless.

Get creative and experiment with different materials, colors, and designs to make earrings that are truly one-of-a-kind.
